Formation of protective rust layers The protective rust layer that is formed on the outer surface of weathering steel is called patina. The patina formation process is facilitated by frequent cycles of wetting and drying on the surface of the weathering steel. It commonly takes between two to six years for the patina to fully form. The atmospheric conditions and the surrounding air quality, in terms of moisture, pollution level, etc. can affect the rate of the patina formation and the final colour of the weathering steel. The common colours found on weathering steel vary "from fresh, newly developed orange-brown, to light and eventually dark brown".
