Pellet furnaces require certified double-layer ventilation, typically 3 or 4 inches in diameter, stainless steel inside and galvanized outside. Because pellet furnaces have a forced exhaust system, they have the advantage of not always requiring vertically ascending exhaust, although 3-5 ft (0.91-1.52 m) vertical operation induces some airflow and is recommended to prevent leakage in the event of a power outage. Like modern gas appliances, pellet stoves can be ventilated horizontally through an exterior wall and terminated below the roof line, making them an excellent choice for structures without chimneys. If an existing chimney is available, the manufacturer urges proper drawing of the chimney using the correct size of stainless steel liner length. Modern construction techniques have created tightly sealed homes, forcing many pellet furnace manufacturers to recommend that their stoves be fitted with external air intakes to ensure that the stoves operate efficiently and to prevent potential negative pressures in the home.
