In this process, the complete lack of oxygen suppresses any oxidation reactions that would lead to oxidizing compounds, the final step in the normal combustion reaction chain. In the presence of oxygen, we don't have pyrolysis, just traditional combustion.

Decomposition can be defined as this process, but it will be simplified in order to describe the series of reactions that occur during the complex pyrolysis process, which is actually a continuous series of combinations and decomposition.

Pyrolysis of wood has always been used, an example being the pyre used to produce charcoal, in fact a certain percentage of oxygen is present in the charcoal pits, but the percentage is so low that traditional combustion is not allowed. In more recent times, pyrolysis has been used in waste-to-energy plants suitable for waste disposal, and the advantages and disadvantages of this solution have not always attracted attention, at least not as much as they deserve.

Pyrolysis in plants, whether in a household stove or a waste-to-energy plant, has the same operational philosophy.

As we have seen, this process occurs through chemical dissociation and recombination, and with the right thermal conditions we can break down a complex molecule into many simpler parts.
