How many chimneys do I need for my fireplace?

Because there are many differences between fireplace brands and types, there is no minimum distance that can be comprehensively referenced. Many direct vent devices require horizontal vents of at least 6 inches or vertical vents of 2 to 3 feet. Wood-burning fireplaces typically require a 15-foot vent, which runs from the bottom of the fireplace to the top of the chimney end. There is also a 10/3/2 rule that applies to wood-burning fireplaces. The rule states that the chimney must extend three feet above the roof penetration on the upward side of the pipe, and that the top of the chimney must be two feet higher than any part of the building structure within 10 feet. Depending on the pitch of your roof, this could create a 3-foot chimney on the roof, or it could reach 15 feet or more.
