After a few uses, the oil will burn into the dish, which is when the grill is at its best. This also prevents the plate from rusting when the grill is not in use. For best results, use a high-burning oil, such as sunflower oil. No cleaning is required; excess oil and food can be tossed in the fire, and a damp cloth can be used to wipe the grill pan. After about 25-30 minutes, the inner rim of the pot will reach 275-300 °C. Corten steel, made in the USA in 1939, is an alloy that develops a natural rust-resistant coating over time when it is exposed to the weather. The rust on the outside forms a protective layer that prevents the degradation of the steel inside. Weathering steel is used all over the world. Remarkably, one of Britain's greatest landmarks, Antony Gormley's Angel of the North, was made of Corten. Other notable examples include Picasso sculptures in Chicago and the Museum of Old and New Art in Australia. In most cases, your weathering steel product will arrive free of rust. It may have a slight patina or black oil residue, which is completely normal. 2. When weathering begins, the residue breaks down and a rust color begins to appear. During this time, any runoff could contaminate stone or concrete surfaces.
3. After weathering (about 6-9 months), runoff may still occur, but the impact is relatively small. When your weathering steel arrives, unpack it immediately to prevent any moisture between packages and keep the seal sealed. Failure to do so may result in irregular rust and stains. What if you want to speed up weathering? Fortunately, science can help you figure things out quickly and easily. All you need is salt water. Dissolve about a teaspoon of salt in about a liter of water to get a weak salt solution. Spray or coat the solution evenly on the weathering steel and that's it! Repeat this process five or so times over the course of a few weeks, and you'll start to see rust very quickly.
